Good mission, sorry I was a bit grumpy in the end, I guess I kind of expected a different take on the subject and when we went all guns blazing like we usually do, it lost the "special" meaning for me. Thinking more about it, I guess the main limiting factor was time and I guess there wasn’t much else we could do in the ~10 minutes we had left, so my fault for expecting the impossible.
What I envisioned prior to the op that would happen;
We scout the area with drones, elevated positions or smaller teams, mark enemy activity, patrol paths, drug delivery paths (vehicles) if any, etc.
Based on that, we evaluate as many possible scenarios that could happen when we open fire, ie. where the VIP would run, what means it could use to escape, if/where to avoid shooting at the buildings, what ammo to use to not pierce the buildings accidentally, where can we expect enemy reinforcements from, with what assets, etc., etc.
Using 1-3 men teams, we block the escape paths - putting SLAM mines near the roads leading out of the village and/or getting a sniper into position to disable any escape vehicles (pierce tires, destroy helicopter engine, etc.), position AT/AA guys in positions where they could disable any incoming extraction vehicles and to delay reinforcements.
Creep around the village, identify viable entry points, position marksmen to cover as much ground between buildings as possible (ie. so they see into village alleys).
Assign targets/groups of engagement, so we disable the enemy force within seconds, not minutes, and wait for the right moment.
Spring the trap, eliminate enemies, capture VIP, exfil as fast as possible.
Granted, we didn’t exactly have the time or equipment to do all that, but I guess I missed the mindset described above, it seemed too much like "let’s get into some position, start shooting and see what happens".
Maybe I was playing too much Ghost Recon: Wildlands recently, but there’s an objective type where you have to capture/interrogate an enemy lieutenant in an (arbitrary) base. When playing solo, I virtually never ever succeed in this, because they guy always has some vehicle ready and starts running as soon as somebody sneezes too loud. Even if I disable the vehicles, he just disappears into a jungle or runs down a slope onto the freeway and grabs a civilian vehicle or a helicopter picks him up somewhere or he gets killed by a random explosion caused by me furiously trying to stop him running.
The point is - it’s impossible to just "open up" and see what happens, you have to plan. Thoroughly. And not make mistakes or have backup plans for the backup plans so you’re covered even when you screw up. And if you don’t, you either get lucky (like we did today) and the VIP just stays in place waiting for the shooting to stop and/or doesn’t have the resources for an escape path, … or you don’t and the VIP escapes.
I can’t wait for the pre-mission planning thing proposed in another thread, that would potentially enable all this complexity. Assuming they community is up for this kind of challenge (see my old thread of which I did one mission before realizing we didn’t have the technical means to do this properly - we have now).
If you think I went too far and believe today’s mission is exactly what you’d like to see in the future, do speak up as well, I might be alone in which case I’ll just shut up.
Yeah, I wanted stealthy approach too but then again, for all the things you listed maybe it wasn’t feasible. I’ll add drones, tweak operatives in the same group etc. Noted.
We should have a second go! Next time none of this 90 degree over watch nonsense with suppressing fire as one team moves in. That’s a one way ticket to Dullsville. We wait till dusk and crawl in like snake ninjas.
