Operation Capture and Playback: OCAP

As I said during the debrief, I have to commend the radio comms on 152 and 148 during this operation. We were PLT, Alpha, DGR, NB1, and NB2 on long-range, and our comms were extremely smooth overall. Even in hectic situations, when the occasional “stepping on each other” is hard to avoid, everyone immediately dialled back comms, and @Fishgrit did a great job instructing in what order he wanted to address multiple incoming messages.

Having two Night Birds was helpful due to the lack of ground vehicles, especially since our helicopters had no lock-on warning systems, making them more vulnerable to man-pads.

There was a blue-on-blue incident at the first objective, resulting from infantry not retreating back from a free-fire zone. Keep in mind that most older helos have no advanced optics, pilots are shooting at moving pixels. Thus when PLT calls out a clear zone of engagement (in this case 100m North of green smoke) it is vital to immediately retreat back to the rest of the platoon and not fiddle with an enemy vehicle or you will be mistaken as dismounted hostiles.

Lastly a minor point of improvement because it came up in a few ops lately: when boarding a transport vehicle (especially under fire) it is really important to use the ALL IN command only once - when everybody who needs to be exfilled is in. Do not use it for individual elements such as “Alpha all in”, “Dagger all in”, “Platoon all in”. Too many times, I’ve seen a driver or pilot take off too early because, over gunfire and explosions, they only heard ALL IN.

Hence, the comms should go: “Alpha IN,” “Dagger IN” then the highest-ranking leader always boards last (in this case, PLT) and finally calls “All IN.” That way, it’s unmistakably clear when a driver or pilot should hustle out of a hot AO.

Also, kudos to @Price for choosing vehicle assets that are somewhat limited in their ability to dominate the battlefield, thus the infantry platoon doesn’t get overshadowed and can get some action too.

I really enjoyed this operation. It was unfortunate that I lost sight of my last remaining team mate Mastick as we retreated from the mosque. He got shot in the leg and couldn’t move while I thought we had already fully disengaged. I’ll be looking around for buddies more, next time we’re moving in a hurry.

Studying the OCAP for a bit, the only thing I can think of adding is: More than once ALPHA is pinned down by lone gunmen up on ridges. Fair enough, no-one likes taking a bullet, and in the initial shock of being fired upon it’s hard to determine enemy strength and numbers—I don’t know the server settings, so I don’t know if this is viable, but could these lone dudes be forced to keep their heads down by the DAR (Or in this specific mission even the cheeky MMG ALPHA brought along) while a maneuver element flushes them out?
An entire element being pinned by just some guy seems like a tactical paralysis that ought to be well outside the scope of one nobody with an AK-47, especially after the opening volley and everyone has their bearings again.
Long range semi-auto fire favours light infantry, but we have a fuck-off big gun and body armour, why not use it to kill the prick.
