The recent uprising in Czechoslovakia has pushed multiple NATO countries to back the Czevhoslovak army in their struggle. The answer from the USSR was quick and they immediately started a broad push on the West German Border. NORTHAG rapidly dispatched US reserve units stationed in Belgium and the Netherlands to counter the push in the area of Rosche.

OPORD

I Situation

The 242nd Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment is putting pressure on the 2nd squadron of the 5th Cavalry defending the Oetzen-Stocken line on the Wipperau river. To relieve that pressure the 3rd battalion of the 227th Air Cav is tasked with carrying out a spoiling attack on the 242nd rear lines to destroy their support assets and box the Soviet regiment against our friendly lines.

Friendly Forces

  • The 2nd squadron of the 5th Cavalry defending Oetzen west of the AO
  • Platoon, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie
  • A CH-47 Chinook will insert/extract the platoon in/out the AO

Assets

  • 5x M998 Humvee for reinsert
  • 2x M939 Trucks for resupply

Enemy Forces

  • USSR forces. Regulars with late 1980’s Soviet equipment. Mainly rear guard units with few armoured vehicles (BRDM/ BTR 70) and transport vehicles. Multiple artillery pieces doted around the area.

Civilians

  • None most of the local population got evacuated ahead of the assault.

II Mission

The platoon is tasked with hitting the rear lines of 242nd as hard as they can. Destroying the support elements of the attackers. The AA net, the artillery pit, the artillery unit HQ and the ammo dump. Then proceed to Neumuhle to block the retreat of the 242nd.

III Execution

Commander’s Intent

  • The mission will be conducted primarily on foot after heli insertion
  • Use cover, micro terrain and lush areas to assault the various objectives. Speed and aggression are key early on.
  • The mission will be considered successful if most of the support element of 242nd are destroyed and their attack folded.
  • The mission will be considered a failure if 242nd gets away from the encirclement unscathed.

Movement Plan

  • The main attack will be carried out mostly on foot. The objectives are close together and maneuvering within OPFOR territory will lead to almost constant skirmishes and engagement.

Fire Support

  • None. Fire support is on priority to the main defensive effort of the 5th Cav.

Optional Tasks

  • None

IV Administration / Logistics

  • As the platoon will be behind OPFOR lines no POW will be taken.
  • Entrenching tools and explosives will be available to be distributed at the start of the operation.
  • Once the AA net is down over the town of Testorf. The Air Cav FOB will be deployed there. Reinserts will start from that position onward.

Resupplying

  • Resupply will be available as the AA net covering the northern portion of the AO is disabled.

Reinforcements

  • Reinsertions will be on the hour every hour and be adhered to strictly, no deviation is allowed.
  • Reinsertions are the same for all, including vehicles teams.
  • Platoon Commander has a two time reinsertion wild card at their disposal, call this in through HQ.
  • At predesignated times, reinforcements will be sent out of the base in the smallest transport vehicle which can hold reinforcements.
  • Upon insertion to the AO, reinforcements should stick together until regrouping with the main force in the AO.

I had quite the bit of fun this mission!

I had great FTLs (@Garf and @Koffer) and a great PLT (@Mattdogs) which made communications easy, and they had good control over their fireteam, so I was just a delegator for PLT and an escort for @Stoneowl saving lives.

It got a lot more chaotic towards the end as people dropped off and left the mission, and after PLT got killed, causing me to have to take over.
I was messy, could’ve planned approaches better, and I was rushing things a bit too much trying to keep things flowing.
I also "rambo"d a bit too much, causing me to get killed or downed, when I was careless in front of hostiles.

Great op, great job Alpha, PLT and Bravo!

Cheers!

I’ll add onto our documentation to-do list for the mission making wiki information on what changes the standard adoption modules bring.
