OPORD code

I Situation:

Insurgents have recently spread their activities from their stronghold of Tottah and have captured nearby town of Abbadaez while our forces were deployed elsewhere. Local populace in Abbadaez have been continuously beaten, threatened, and harrased due to their good relations with us. Situation is critical since we risk alienating the local populace if we fail to protect them. Small distance from Abbadaez to our base is also a reason for concern as it gives insurgents a good position to launch an offensive from. Strike quicky while insurgent forces are divided between the stronghold itself and nearby towns.

Friendly Forces:

Carpe Noctem Tactical Operations

Assets:

[] 5x M1025A2 (M2)
[
] 4x M1025A2 M2
[] 4x M1097A2 2D
[
] 2x M1232

Enemy Forces:

Insurgents

Civilians:

Heavy civilian presence

II Mission:

Liberate nearby town of Abbadaez and secure villages in the Azagal Valley and village of Suhanir above the insurgent stronghold of Tottah in preparation for the assault on Tottah itself.

III Execution:

Commander’s intent

Perform a swift attack on enemy positions while minimising friendly and civilian casulties.

Movement Plan

Liberate the town of Abbadaez and assault the Azagal Valley. Intel suggests that the best place to cross the dry riverbed is aprox. halfway between Abbadaez and Hama.

IV Administration / Logistics:

Resupplying

Resupply by ground on PLTs request.

Reinforcements:

[] At predesignated times, reinforcements will be sent out of the base in smallest transport vehicle which can hold reinforcements
[
] Upon insertion to the AO, reinforcements should stick together until regrouping with the main force in the AO

OPFORD is a bit sketchy on details of our forces and the enemy but it does give fairly clear instruction on how and where to attack. We know where to cross the dry river. We know how to get to our objective. We also know exactly what our objective is, why we are capturing it and where the enemy is likely to come from. This seems pretty realistic as orders can often be a bit prescriptive, they tell a commander what to do and how but often skip over the reasons as they might reveal intelligence sources or the army you are in just doesn’t think a platoon leader should worry about such things  All in all pretty bloody realistic. Let’s just hope HQ don’t just want us to go down the Azaga Valley because it is more pretty than the Suhani Valley!

So splitting this OPFORD up into a quick study the key elements:

50 Cal Humvees and Cargo Humvees and I think Armed MRAPs. Presumably our standard infantry elements. I would hope to have two infantry squad elements, a recon and platoon element.

The terrain is a bit harsh with MRAPs having to stick to the road and even the Humvees having problems in this terrain. The optimal crossing is very nice for getting out of the river bed and heading south but you should be careful entering the river bed driving straight down into it should be safe. The road at the south leads down to the river bed and allows you to get out nicely.

The enemy intel is literally one word “Insurgents” so I guess they probably will be lightly armed infantry not in uniform and limited to technicals? Civilians are friendly and there is a “heavy presence” so we should be open to any doing the friendship dance who might want to give us some intel! Also keep the grenades and 50 cal support fire to a minimum when clearing buildings.

Try and take one or two armed Humvees and the rest being the transport Humvees. Unless we have to take them keep the MRAPs at home for reinforcements.

I have split my plan into two, the attack on Abbadaez and then the move to Suhanir

 1. Head down the MSR fast as possible since there are good views either side. Then head NW round the Khassadar Plant to Hill 1534. If we are engaged use the clear lines of fire to supress with the 50s while flanking and finishing the enemy, they should have much cover.
 2. Dismount behind cover next to the hill. There is a wooded valley north of the road into town. The road is high so no point sending infantry either side as they cannot support each other, they both sneak through the trees up the valley while armed vic and recon cover the NE and SE of town.
 3. Bravo takes the north edge of the NE of town while Alpha clears the compounds. If it looks safe you could move recon or even the armed vic up but that is risky. Probably better to stay at Hill 1534.
 4. If the west side of town looks fairly quiet, then move down and bravo can clear it while alpha clears SE. If any part of town looks too difficult for a single squad, then move them both together identifying buildings for the suppressing element to supress while the other moves to clear.
 5. After clearing town regroup on the MSR to the south and mount up.

Then we cross the dry river and head south.

 1. Head to crossing on blue line recon crosses first followed by rest of convoy.
 2. Turn left off road before the bend so as to not leave vehicles in plain sight of Rhyil.
 3. Clear Rhyil bounding along the road with the armed vic covering.
 4. Regroup south of Rhyil and move dismounted with the vics behind until we see the Azaga Farm. Alpha goes left up the hill to clear the farm buildings while Bravo clears the fields in the valley.
 5. Regroup with vics. Vics then head for the over watch behind a load of rocks that you cannot see from this map. Infantry follows road or just south of it staying in cover from Suhanir.
 6. Clear Fata and then Bravo heads into town either directly or more from the south while Alpha tries to attack at 90 degrees from the West. The armed vic at the OW only exposes itself to fire at targets clearly marked as enemy positions and does not expose itself if there are no targets marked by the main force or recon.
 7. The town is cleared out with the infantry main body sticking together if there is heavy resistance and splitting up if it seems an element each can clear each half north and south on its own.
 8. Regroup in the North of Suhanir finish?

We might want to be careful about the ridges on the side of Rhyil (as you named it  ). They provide a good overview on the valley and also have some nice cover (lots of trees and rocks). Also reinforcements could come from Suhanir and take position on the eastern ridge, we should keep an eye on them.

PS: Quick question about those tactial planning: are we actually "allowed" to go into the editor and check every terrain detail ? There is obviously no way to forbid this but do we want to "roleplay" this and plan something only with a map or can we grant ourselve omniscience ? Ignoring some details and then having to adapt the plan accordingly when playing the mission could be interesting too.

Whether to do the planning with the image provided or go inside map is up to you. What is important is the output. Your information will be limited to knowledge of the landscape anyway. It is far from being omniscient. It isn’t even really that immersion breaking or out of the context of roleplay. In reality there would often be recon units, people who know the area and one would try to go on site to lay eyes on the AO before the OP anyway. Goal of the section is to create a plan and have some fun. If you feel the limitations add to your fun then go with them.
