I’ve always enjoyed this type of counter-insurgency, patrol ops so this one was right up my alley. I like the usage of IED-s by the GM since we don’t actually encounter them that much, even when doing patrols. Unfortunately, ENGs misidentified one of them which led to PLT (me) getting blown up when I walked over it because I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking (looking at the map + radio). The only reason I picked up PLT is that it was promised that PLT would be a part of a zoning dispute discussion with the locals and me being dead kinda prevented me from doing that. And for that, I will never be able to forgive ENG.
I know ENG were a bit unhappy with me pushing them to take the armed humvees with them. Reason for that is that GM, with the info he provided, led me to believe that main force is not allowed to take any vehicles from the base, and that ENG would ocasionally be called away from main force to deal with other IEDs in the area so I wanted them to have some means of transport with them. That way NTB would still be able to provide air cover for the main force, and additional units given to ENG would be there to provide security for them. In hindsight (and with more clear info), I would have taken only 2 ENGs and attach them to Bravo so that I could use them as a proper fireteam as yesterday I always held ENGs back waiting for a call from HQ to come.
Really happy with Alpha for all the heavy lifting they did. Seb in a leading role is stellar, as always. Dachi and Shadisica were brilliant, as well. I hope I didn’t make your life too hard with changing orders quickly every once in a while. Shame about the objective at the end. During the op, nothing led me to believe that we would be dealing with a timed dead-man switch so when the last IED was discovered I presumed it would be the same as all before it and we would have time to clear the compound before defusing the explosive and securing the hostages. Some roleplaying from the GM could have helped there ![]()

Regarding your last comment about not knowing what trigger was selected for the IEDs in the mosque is bs.
In arma, there are four activation devices:
- Pressure plate/wire
- Manual trigger
- Timer
- Deadman switch
Ignoring the first option (since a closer look would have revealed the "IEDs" to be satchel charges, which cannot be activated via pressure plate), all other three require a timely fashion to disable as they could be triggered at any moment:
- A manual trigger would be activated as soon as the insurgents knew their cause was lost.
- A timer would mean expediting movement for engineers before it runs out.
- A deadman switch means not killing the man with the switch.
In this case, the deadman switch was connected to the main bomber in the mosque, after his death a timer started before the explosives went off. This was done to give engineers double the time to deal with the explosives.
Instead, you held them back on a hill where they had nearly 0 overwatch apart from the towers and let Alpha rampantly fire into the mosque, shooting two civvies and the bomber with the deadman switch.
When Alpha engaged and called in IEDs, the call to move engineers wasn’t made until a full 5 minutes later, resulting in them needing another 5 minutes to even reach the mosque. That’s when the timer ran out, and in my opinion thats fair game.
EDIT: Also, during the OP nothing led you to believe to be dealing with a deadman switch is also wrong. A suicide bomber charged one of the elements and exploded when he was shot after a small delay.
Alpha were ordered to clear the compound before ENG would move in. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would order someone to go defuse an IED while under fire or while their surroundings were not secured. Getting shot and downed while defusing something only increses the problem.
ENG were ordered to be on the overwatch since the mosque + it’s courtyard is small and could not fit Alpha + ENG inside without risking friendly fire and major confusion in securing the area. ENG were able to provide good overwatch on the towers and southern entrance to the mosque.
And the last point is not wrong in my eyes since I was very much dead during the suicide attack and was not informed of it when requesting a sitrep later.

Thats a failure in communication, not the mission
i hate arma, IED bad.
Loved the mission though, I’d love to see more in that setting with more IED’s. It’s missions like them that allow people that aren’t that confident with leading to get better and thrive.
